On March 8, the world comes together to honor the fight for women's rights. International Women’s Day (IWD) is a time to reflect on the progress made toward gender equality and to celebrate the achievements of women worldwide. This year, the international students at NAU marked the occasion with a lively fitness afternoon, blending exercise, fun, and meaningful discussions to honor the spirit of the day.

The event kicked off with an energetic aerobics session led by a female student who also serves as the health coordinator. With her intense workout routine, participants pushed through a series of 20-second workouts followed by 5-second breaks. The session had everyone sweating but smiling as they embraced the fun side of fitness. After the aerobics, the students dove into a variety of fun sports activities, culminating in a spirited co-ed football game that brought everyone together.

But the day wasn’t just about physical activity—it was also a time for reflection and celebration of women’s contributions to society. Francisco Matos from Mozambique shared a poetic sentiment, calling women “a mirror of intuition and wisdom.” Eric from Rwanda highlighted the importance of gender equality, stating, “When women have equal opportunities, voices, and access to resources, we unlock the full potential of our society. Gender equality is not just a moral imperative—it is a key driver of success for our countries.”

During the discussions, many female students expressed gratitude for the opportunity to study at NAU, seeing it as a testament to the growing recognition of women’s capabilities. One student remarked, “I am happy that I can be chosen as a leader and get fair recognition. From breaking barriers to driving innovation, shaping communities, and inspiring future generations, women continue to redefine possibilities.”

The event was a heartwarming display of unity, with both men and women coming together to celebrate and support one another. While challenges to achieving full gender equality remain, the day served as a reminder that progress is made through collective effort and mutual support.

In the end, the International Women’s Day celebration at NAU was more than just a fitness afternoon—it was a powerful statement of solidarity, empowerment, and hope for a more inclusive future. As the students demonstrated, when we come together to break barriers, we create lasting change.
