 LABLAH, CATHERINE CELESTINE

My Personal experience and takeaways from the study trip in Henan Province

Through the tour at the exhibition hall, I got to know details about comrade Jiao Yulu and that he was a Chinesepublic servant and Communist Party member knownfor his effortsto combat poverty and improve living conditions in rural areas during the 60s and 70s. He was regarded as a hero in China for his selflessdedication to public service and his popular slogan Serve the People.

I learned that he served as the Party Secretary of Lankao county in Henan province during the 1960s and 1970s. And during his time, he was more focused on improving the living conditions of rural residents by addressing issues such as poverty, education, and healthcare.

Jiao's dedication to public service and his focus on grassroots development earned him the respect and admiration of local residents. He was knownfor his hands-onapproach to problem-solving, often visitingvillages and personally inspecting projects to ensure their success.

As one of the tour guides mentioned, one of his most notable achievements was his successful campaign to combat water-logging in Lankao, which had long been a problem for local farmers. He mobilized residents and resources to build drainage systems and canals, which significantly reduced the amount of flooded farmland, and all these were shown in the exhibition hall.

Jiao also worked tirelessly to improve education in Lankao, organizing the construction of newschools and promoting literacy programs for both children and adults. He recognized that educationwas crucial to breaking the cycle of poverty in rural areas. I will say, comrade Jiao started the process of poverty alleviation in the whole of China based on his works and how people have tried to emulatehis service to humanity.

Unfortunately, Jiao Yulus work in Lankao took a toll on his health, and he died of liver cancer in 1964 at the age of 42. Despitehis death, his legacy continuesto inspire others.Today, Jiao Yulu is remembered as a hero of the Chinese people. His example shows that with dedication and hard work, it is possible to make a meaningful differencein the lives of others, even in the face of daunting challenges.

Secondly, Ill like to reflect particularly on the poverty alleviation audit presentation done by representative of the Lankao County Audit Bureau. This plus the walk throughthe village to me is considered a hands on practical knowledge of what we are taught in the classroom. Its quite interesting to know that President Xi Jinpingwas able to transform the lives of the citizens within a very short period of time. This couldntbe possible without a system in place. Its the system that President Xi built and the foundationof comrade Yulu, the mobilization and collective efforts and capacity of the citizens that made this possible. This is a global challenge that many countries around the world are still trying to find solutions to and to see that China has accomplished that is amazing. I was very much impressed by the livelihood of the villagersespecially on Happiness street.

To conclude, this narrative would be incomplete if I dont mention the Paulownia tree comrade Jiao Yulu planted, the Guqin musical instruments made from the paulownia tree and lastly our visit at the Millennium City Park. These moments were the highlight of the trip for me. Big thanks to CNAO and Nanjing Audit Universityfor this great experience and like I mentioned in the feedbacksession of the trip, we appreciate this so highly and will recommend more of these study programswhich will give us a better understanding of what we are learning in school, understanding the Chinese culture and other basic leadership skills.I am definitely looking forwardto another trip with an extended duration. Thanks again for this opportunity as we all strive to emulate the leadership style of comradeJiao Yulu, a hero to all of us.
